Challenges

In mid-2025, Microsoft retired Classic Purview eDiscovery (Standard and Premium) and introduced its new modern UI. Corporate legal and IT teams were required to address the changes proactively to ensure uninterrupted workflows. The new UI lacked functional parity and a familiar interface:

  • PowerShell deprecations broke existing automations and scripts.
  • New export formats disrupted downstream processes.
  • Key functionality losses, such as CSV data import and export options for Condensed Directory Structure format and Azure storage, necessitated new workflow designs.
  • Terminology changes (e.g., Custodians renamed to People) created confusion for legal teams.

Along with these changes, organizations were also dealing with new data types and changing data storage locations.

  • Copilot adoption added new data types with separate preservation, collection, and export requirements.
  • Teams private channel chats, and other collaboration data stored in new repositories, complicated retention and collection.

The pace and scope of Microsoft’s changes creates the need for ongoing expertise and proactive adaptation to sustain defensible eDiscovery practices.
